Acequia Sign — La Llorona
Rural Myth Co. | Field & Folklore
Every kid in the Southwest knows the rule.
Be home before dark.
Our Acequia Sign La Llorona shirt takes inspiration from the enduring legend of La Llorona, the Weeping Woman who wanders near rivers and waterways calling for her children.
The artwork depicts an old hand-painted tin sign nailed to a weathered wooden post beside a narrow irrigation ditch.
The sign reads:
ACEQUIA
NIÑOS A CASA ANTES DEL ANOCHECER
KIDS HOME BEFORE DARK
Behind the sign, the water disappears into tall reeds.
A full moon hangs over the ditch.
And on the far bank, a pale woman in a long white dress stands with her back turned.
Her face is hidden.
The warning continues:
SI LA OYES LLORAR, VETE A CASA.
IF YOU HEAR HER CRYING, GO HOME.
Inspired by the traditional La Llorona stories told throughout Mexico and the American Southwest, this original design combines vintage bilingual sign painting, restrained woodcut illustration, and the quiet atmosphere of a moonlit waterway.
There are many versions of the legend.
But the practical advice tends to remain remarkably consistent.
If you hear a woman crying near the water after dark, it’s probably time to head home.
Rendered in Bone, Fog Gray, Rust Red, and Mustard on Pine Black, the artwork captures the feeling of an old warning that has been repeated for generations.
