Ada’s Sampler
Rural Myth Co. | Field & Folklore
Ada was eleven when she stitched her sampler.
She chose her verse carefully.
In 1891, a young girl might spend hours practicing her letters, working neat rows of cross-stitches into a piece of linen that would be kept and treasured for generations.
Ada’s work was no different.
At least, not at first glance.
Our Ada’s Sampler folk horror cross-stitch shirt recreates a fictional nineteenth-century needlework heirloom, complete with carefully stitched alphabet rows, a traditional decorative border, and a little log cabin nestled among the pines.
There’s a crescent moon overhead.
Smoke curls from the chimney.
And somewhere among the stitched trees stands a figure that seems much too tall.
Beneath the alphabet, Ada has worked a simple verse:
WHAT CALLS YOUR NAME FROM THE HOLLER IS NOT YOUR MOTHER.
The sampler is signed:
WORKED BY ADA · AGED 11 · 1891

Perhaps Ada thought the warning was explanation enough.
