Except that somebody—or something—has already stepped off.
Along the edge of the boardwalk, a trail of tiny bare footprints leaves the wooden planks and disappears into the moss.
The footprints are only a few inches long.
There are no children in sight.
And nobody seems particularly interested in explaining where they came from.
