Captured Alive — The Hodag
Rural Myth Co. | Field & Folklore
Step right up.
Ten cents to see the beast.
Lighting kept low for your safety.
Our Captured Alive — The Hodag sideshow shirt recreates a hand-painted carnival sideshow banner from the days when a traveling exhibition could make a respectable living with a canvas tent, a convincing story, and very little illumination.
The attraction?
A genuine Northwoods Hodag.
Or so the proprietor insists.
The enormous horned beast rears on a rocky ledge, its spined back and thick tail framed by Wisconsin pines.
Above it, the banner proudly announces:
CAPTURED ALIVE IN THE NORTHWOODS
Below, in lettering large enough to attract customers from the next county:
THE HODAG
Admission is straightforward:
SEE IT FOR 10¢
And, for the protection of the paying public:
LIGHTING KEPT LOW FOR YOUR SAFETY
We assume the management has its reasons.
Inspired by the famous Wisconsin Hodag hoax and the grand traditions of nineteenth-century carnival showmanship, this original design combines regional folklore with vintage sideshow advertising.
Rendered in Rust Red, Moss Green, Tobacco Brown, Muted Gold, and Pine Black, the artwork features distressed canvas, brass grommets, hand-painted lettering, and one extremely marketable monster.
Part of the Field & Folklore Collection from Rural Myth Co.
Perfect for Wisconsin locals, Hodag enthusiasts, cryptid collectors, vintage carnival fans, folklore lovers, and anyone who appreciates a business model built around charging admission before turning down the lights.
Captured alive.
Ten cents admission.
