Make the Bridge — Headless Horseman
Rural Myth Co. | Field & Folklore
You don’t have to outrun him.
You just have to reach the bridge.
Our Make the Bridge Headless Horseman shirt draws inspiration from Washington Irving’s classic 1820 tale, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.
The scene is viewed from inside a dark wooden covered bridge, looking backward down a moonlit road.
Bare autumn trees line the path.
Mist hangs low over the ground.
And galloping toward the bridge is a headless rider on a powerful black horse, holding a glowing carved pumpkin high above the saddle.
Over the entrance hangs a weathered sign:
COVERED BRIDGE — WALK YOUR HORSE
Sound advice under ordinary circumstances.
These are not ordinary circumstances.
Beneath the illustration, the message is considerably more urgent:
MAKE THE BRIDGE.
Followed by:
HE CAN’T FOLLOW YOU ACROSS.
Inspired by the old Sleepy Hollow legend, this original design combines dramatic nineteenth-century woodcut illustration, antique typography, and the enduring folklore of the Headless Horseman.
Rendered in Bone, Fog Gray, Pine Black, and a single flash of Weathered Orange, the artwork captures the moment when the bridge is the only thing standing between a traveler and a very determined rider.
The horse is gaining.
The pumpkin is glowing.
And the bridge is just ahead.
