Something is walking on the rooftops.
Our Pine Barrens Gazette — Extra Jersey Devil shirt recreates a fictional January 1909 newspaper front page reporting one of the strangest weeks in South Jersey folklore.
The headline says it all:
THE DEVIL WALKS THE ROOFTOPS
Across the region, residents reported mysterious hoofprints appearing in the snow.
Some claimed to have seen a strange winged creature with a horse-like head, small horns, hooves, and a long tail.
Others simply preferred to stay indoors.
The newspaper reports:
STRANGE HOOFED TRACKS FOUND FROM TOWN TO TOWN
Followed by the rather concerning announcement:
MILLS CLOSED · SCHOOLS CLOSED · DOORS BARRED
A dramatic old-fashioned woodcut shows the creature crouched on a snowy rooftop beneath a winter moon.
The surrounding houses are quiet.
The hoofprints are not.
Inspired by the legendary Jersey Devil sightings of January 1909, this original design combines antique newspaper typography, traditional woodcut illustration, and the atmosphere of a community trying to decide whether the local monster has developed an interest in residential roofing.
