Shaft No. 4 Check Tag
Rural Myth Co. | Field & Folklore
Underground, the rule was simple.
When the rock starts knocking, you leave.
Shaft No. 4 Check Tag is a mining folklore shirt inspired by the numbered brass tokens miners once used to track who was working below the surface.
Each worker received a check tag.
The foreman kept the board.
And everyone knew which miners were still underground.
But mining country had its own stories about what else might be down there.
The knockers.
Small, unseen beings whose mysterious tapping was sometimes believed to warn of an approaching cave-in.
Our vintage-style brass check tag features a large stamped 4, a crossed pickaxe, an antique carbide miner’s lamp, and three small groups of curved knocking marks.
Around the rim, a practical warning reads:
DEEP SHAFT No. 4
WHEN THE WALLS KNOCK, WALK OUT.
RURAL MYTH CO.
Rendered in Muted Gold and Bone, this original design combines historical mining equipment with the eerie traditions of underground folklore.
