Stream of the Blue Men — Scottish Maritime Folklore T-Shirt
Rural Myth Co. | Field & Folklore
They’ll give you two lines of verse.
Finish the rhyme.
Some sailors worry about storms.
Others worry about rocks.
In the waters between Lewis and the Shiant Isles, the old stories suggest you should also worry about your poetry.
Our Stream of the Blue Men Scottish folklore shirt depicts a dramatic scene from Hebridean folklore.
A small wooden sailing boat struggles through rough water.
Dark rocky islands rise in the distance.
And around the boat, three blue-skinned figures emerge from the waves.
Their long gray beards drip with seawater.
Their hands grip the gunwale.
One leans toward the skipper, issuing a challenge.
According to the legend, the Blue Men of the Minch would confront passing sailors with lines of verse.
A skipper who could finish the rhyme was allowed to sail on.
A skipper who couldn’t?
Well.
The sea is very deep.
Rendered in Pine Black, Minch Blue, Fog Gray, and Bone, this vintage-inspired woodcut combines Scottish maritime folklore with a wonderfully unreasonable supernatural test.
The lettering reads:
SRUTH NAM FEAR GORMA
STREAM OF THE BLUE MEN
